Underwater (2020, dir. William Ewbank)

A deep underwater drilling platform is compromised; survivors try to escape. Derivative but effective SF/horror piece, taking Alien and sequels as its jumping-off point. Well-designed, with some solid jumpscares and a sturdy lead performance. Pleasingly efficient throughout, if by no means a game-changer.

Deadpool 2 (2018, dir. David Leitch)

After the death of his girlfriend, Deadpool finds redemption in protecting a young mutant. Confident sequel with the same approach as before, mixing cartoony violence, baroque language and metatextual gags.

The Emoji Movie (2017, dir. Tony Leondis)

An accident-prone emoji escapes into the wider world of the smartphone to find a hacker to cure him. Awkward attempt to cash in on a craze of sorts; this movie rips off Toy Story and Inside Out amongst others. Some funny lines, but this is mostly desperate stuff.
