Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016, dir. Ang Lee)

A troubled war hero about to be redeployed struggles with life in America. Its glossy direction and staging notwithstanding, this is an at-times awkward drama that doesn’t offer much new except in its good intentions and immaculate technical credits. Perhaps an indication that not all novels are translatable to film.

The Jesus Rolls (2019, dir. John Turturro)

Two petty criminals and a hairdresser go on a road trip/crime spree. An odd project – a US remake of Bertrand Blier’s Les Valseuses/Going Places retooled for Turturro’s Quintana character from the Coens’ The Big Lebowski – that inevitably feels like fan fiction. Some minor pleasures along the way; the actors seem to be having fun.

Angel Has Fallen (2019, dir. Ric Roman Waugh)

A veteran secret service agent goes on the run after he’s framed for a presidential assassination attempt. Third and best of the Gerry Butler actioners, this is reliable thick ear entertainment with some quality villainy from Danny Huston, and some excellent stuntwork (tho some iffy lighting of greenscreen studio space). Fun while it’s on.

Fantastic Four (2015, dir. Josh Trank)

Five young scientists gain superpowers after opening an interdimensional portal. Unnecessary reboot/origin story which takes an age to get going and doesn’t really have a plot. A strong and well-chosen (though hardly teenage) cast wasted on rote material and some variable FX.

Colossal (2016, dir. Nacho Vigalondo)

A woman returns home after a breakup and finds she can control a monster. Splendidly quirky black comedy about alcoholism, obsession, and childhood friendships. Oh, and kaiju. Well worth your time.
