Hammer (2019, dir. Christian Sparkes)

An estranged father and son are forced to work together when a drug deal goes wrong. Smart, lean all-in-one-day indie thriller with as keen a focus on character and relationships as on the narrative’s spiralling complications. Lots to appreciate and enjoy; recommended. Great to see Will Patton in a leading role too.

Game Night (2018, dir. John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein)

A competitive couple’s regular game night goes awry. Well-sustained comedy of murder-mystery-meets-real-life errors with a smart cast and generally solid script, plus some pizazz in the execution. Undemanding fun if you go with it.

Peppermint (2018, dir. Pierre Morel)

Five years after her family’s murder, a mother returns to the US for revenge. Straightforward action fantasy with a committed lead performance and an outsider’s view of LA. Not great, but there’s a couple of interesting plot wrinkles along the way.

The Last Days [AKA Los Ultimas Dias](2014, dir. David Pastor & Alex Pastor)

After an apocalyptic event, two mismatched co-workers battle across Barcelona’s tunnel system to find their families. Deft and imaginative thriller, with an emphasis on character and humanity as much as on action. Plenty of good stuff to be found here. Recommended.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969, dir. Peter Hunt)

Bond again battles Blofeld; this time up to germ warfare. Despite the awkwardness at times of lead Lazenby, this is perhaps the best all-round Bond; bags of action, some self-aware humour, lovely design work and excellent direction and editing.

Parker (2013, dir. Taylor Hackford)

A double-crossed professional thief tracks down the men who left him for dead. It starts well, but Parker loses its way in comic asides, unfocused subplots and a lack of narrative throughline; a disappointment from this director that doesn’t do justice to the Donald E Westlake source material.
