The Rhythm Section (2020, dir. Reed Morano)

A lost young woman is trained as an assassin to avenge her parents’ terrorism-related deaths. Solid thriller mashing up La Femme Nikita with a comicbook origin story. Lively is a great lead and good technical credits help (there’s a fine one-shot car chase), though the script is rote, and there’s clumsy use of pop song scoring.

Hotel Artemis (2018, dir. Drew Pearce)

One night in a gangsters-only private hospital in riot-torn near-future LA. Derivative but fun low-budget cyberpunk thriller, with elements of the Purge and John Wick movies. The budget’s wisely spent on strength in depth in the casting.

The Predator (2018, dir. Shane Black)

A special forces sniper has his son targeted by extraterrestrials. Odd belated series continuation with some awkward and distasteful ideas and no sense of clarity about its reason to exist. Some neat moments and in-jokes, but this is a disappointing and contrived mess nevertheless.
