Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018, dir. Christopher McQuarrie)

Ethan Hunt and his team battle a nuclear conspiracy involving followers of Solomon Lane. Splendid series continuation from Part 5 (MI: Rogue Nation), with hugely-impressive stuntwork and the usual emphasis on twists and double-crosses. Recommended.

’71 (2014, dir. Jann Demange)

An inexperienced soldier is trapped behind enemy lines in Belfast during the Troubles. Outstanding chase flick which wears its superbly-realised political context lightly to support its well-sustained and tense thriller narrative. Highly recommended.

The Goob (2014, dir. Guy Myhill)

A Norfolk teen clashes with his mother’s violent partner. A great little movie of a Fenland redneck summer – stock car race meets, roadside cafes, and gangmasters – with unshowy performances and a palpable sense of threat and place. Big sky and pylons.
