Run (2020, dir. Aneesh Chaganty)

A teenager begins to suspect that her over-protective mother is hiding a secret. Smart, detailed thriller with excellent lead performances and well-handled suspense scenes. A couple of fine shock moments too, and clear focus on character throughout. Recommended.

Here’s the trailer.

Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011, dir. Sean Durkin)

A young woman struggles with memories of her recent cult commune experience. Excellent austere thriller with horror elements, with a storming cental performance and lots of interesting detail. It’s left to the viewer how much is real, which makes for tense and sometimes unsettling viewing. Recommended.

Ocean’s Eight [AKA Ocean’s 8] (2018, dir. Gary Ross)

A just-released thief puts together a jewel heist. Slick comedy-thriller with a few nods to the Clooney/Pitt/Soderbergh movies. Fun while it’s on, and everyone seems to be having a fine old time.

Bird Box (2018, dir. Suzanne Bier)

After an apocalyptic event, a woman battles to get her two children to safety. Initially interesting though ultimately very straightforward survival yarn with some good supporting performances.

And here’s Xussia’s review.

The Post (2017, dir. Steven Spielberg)

The Washington Post battles to source and then publish revelations about the Vietnam War. Effective journalistic thriller, which works as a prequel to All The President’s Men and as a contemporary allegory. Good performances all round, especially from Streep.
