GI Joe Origins: Snake Eyes [AKA Snake Eyes] (2021, dir. Robert Schwentke)

A martial artist seeking revenge for his father’s death joins a yakuza clan. While it looks good, this is an oddly pointless reboot with muddy, incoherent action, the wasting of some decent onscreen talent, and a miscast lead. Golding can be great, but he’s more George Clooney than the Sho Kusugi that the role needs.

Guns Akimbo (2019, dir. Jason Lei Howden)

A loser programmer find himself in a real-world socially-mediated assassination video game. Frenetic but patchy slapstick action-comedy. Little sense of tone, stakes, internal logic or of pacing, so the energy is misplaced and the excellent cast work against the movie, not with it. Gamer meets Shoot Em Up-ish, though much less ultimately than either.

Bill & Ted Face The Music (2020, dir. Dean Parisot)

The now middle-aged Wyld Stallyns have to travel the multiverse to save reality, their daughters, and their marriages. Unnecessary but still welcome threequel, with enough of a spin on the same plot as twice before to pass muster. Everyone’s having fun, and Winter is especially good.

Mayhem (2017, dir. Joe Lynch)

A rage virus infects a corporate HQ; a lowly just-sacked worker and a mortgage client fight their way to the boardroom. Gleeful horror-comedy with some straightforward points to make about capitalism and workplace culture. Splattery lo-fi fun, with good leads and solid direction helping out no end.

Ready or Not (2019, dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett)

On her wedding day, a bride finds that the games dynasty she’s marrying into has an odd – and potentially murderous – ritual. Generally solid black comedy horror with a great lead performance from Samara Weaving. Bonus points for the gratuitous Kazuo Ishiguro shoutout.

The Babysitter (2017, dir. McG)

A bullied teen finds his babysitter is the head of a satanic cult. Enjoyable horror-comedy with plenty of splattery jokes, a generally light touch, and engaging playing from its leads. Frothy but fun. A sequel followed.
