Holmes & Watson (2018, dir. Etan Cohen)

A celebrated detective battles a plot to assassinate Queen Victoria. A great cast, handsome production values and enthusiastic playing can’t save this mess, seemingly compiled from extensive on-set improvisations rather than a script. Inevitably, some fine moments, but this is a skit stretched to 90 minutes.

Early Man (2018, dir. Nick Park)

A peaceful tribe of cave-dwellers must play football against a Bronze Age crack squad to win back their home. Lovingly-made and beautifully-detailed, this stop-motion flick from Aardman is undemanding fun, even if it’s light on jokes compared to their earlier films.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016, dir. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan)

Sidequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman, minus the first film’s lead. Oddball attempt to craft a continuation; good casting in depth helps a bit, but the story’s a secondhand grab-bag of old tales that have been better retold by others.
