Gunpowder Milkshake (2021, dir. Navot Papushado)

A hitwoman becomes embroiled in an escalating series of double-crosses when a job goes awry. Stylised John Wick-ish action comedy squandering an excellent cast on a cliched script, and on a baffling series of distancing techniques rendering the flick good-looking (and sounding) but empty, flat and uninvolving.

Censor (2021, dir. Prano Bailey-Bond)

In 1980s London, a film examiner struggles when a horror movie reawakens a past trauma. Stylish and confident first feature, with an interesting premise and careful use of limited resources. Vaguely Peter Strickland-ish in its approach: a descent into madness rather than story as such: there’s plenty to admire here, nevertheless.

The Nun (2018, dir. Corin Hardy)

A priest and a novice nun investigate an ancient evil linked to a convent. Daft sidequel to The Conjuring, following from a plot thread in the second movie. Good-looking in places, but po-faced and reliant on jumpscares over much in the way of narrative logic. For series completists only.

Free Fire (2016, dir. Ben Wheatley)

A weapons deal goes bad. A contrived but slick, funny, and thoroughly entertaining action/horror hybrid that makes no bones about its B-movie borrowings. Everyone involved is clearly having fun; Wheatley’s best film to date.
