The Outfit (2022, dir. Graham Moore)

An unassuming tailor finds himself caught in a war between rival mobsters. Deliberately stagey crime drama seemingly based on the pun in the title, with the kinds of twists one might expect: anchored by an immaculate Mark Rylance performance. Not especially filmic, but enjoyable on its own terms.

Don’t Look Up (2021, dir. Adam McKay)

Astronomers struggle to get the government and the media to engage with an extinction-level event. Patchy and overlong Trump-era satire: when it hits, it hits hard, but there’s about 45 minutes too much baggy stuff here. More focus needed: that said, there are some game performances and a great song.

Ready Player One (2018, dir. Steven Spielberg)

A teenager battles an evil corporation in a quest to control a virtual reality game-world. Sporadically spectacular but narratively dull SF adventure which improves on the source novel but still lapses into pop-culture reference tickbox territory at its lamest.

Dunkirk (2017, dir. Christopher Nolan)

Three linked stories, told in different timescales, related to the Allied retreat from Dunkirk. Equal parts puzzle, technical marvel, victory-from-defeat drama, disaster movie and arthouse flick, Nolan’s film is a thing of bleak and understated beauty. Highly recommended.
