The Big Short (2015, dir. Adam McKay)

Drama-documentary explaining the 07/08 financial crash. A chirpy well-cast flick taking a fourth-wall-tastic approach to explain itself as it goes. Ever-so-slightly pleased with itself, this is nevertheless fun, entertaining, and actually shows how and why what went wrong, and the lessons that weren’t learned.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019, dir. Jon Watts)

Peter Parker, on a European school trip with his classmates, comes into contact with both elemental monsters and a new superhero, Mysterio. Upbeat if overlong blend of teen road trip comedy and standard heroic action thrills, acting as a coda to Avengers: Endgame. Well-played and likeable, if episodic on several levels.

Flirting With Love (AKA Loitering With Intent) (2014, dir. Adam Rapp)

Two wannabe screenwriters try to get their heads together in the countryside. Shambling indie comedy-drama which doesn’t really go anywhere  – which is kinda the point – though is at least mercifully brief.
