The Debt Collector 2 [AKA Debt Collectors] (2020, dir. Jesse V Johnson)

French and Sue go to Las Vegas on the promise of a payday. DTV martial arts comedy-thriller sequel that’s a cut above. The mix of bickering and bar fights as before, though there’s some panache in the direction, the action choreography, and the chemistry between the leads. Recommended for genre fans.

Rambo: Last Blood (2019, dir. Adrian Grunberg)

Disjointed and clumsy film. Rambo takes revenge on Mexican human trafficking killers. Off tone and unfortunate follow up, wasting good characters with gory but cut to pieces nonsense. The standard Rambo body count applies. All else is dull and uninteresting.

Avengement (2019, dir. Jesse V Johnson)

An escaped prisoner holds his gangster brother’s criminal friends hostage. Superior DTV violent martial arts action, with a career-best performance from Adkins and a keen sense both of the strengths and limits of the genre.

The Debt Collector (2018, dir. Jesse V. Johnson)

A desperate-for-money martial arts instructor takes a job as a  debt collector. Okay thick ear, with a fight every 5 minutes and some comic moments. Old-school in many ways, and with a tacked-on plot that doesn’t quite work, but reasonable fun for fisticuffs fans. A sequel soon followed.
