The Contractor (2022, dir. Tarek Saleh)

A discharged veteran with money problems reluctantly takes on a private contracting job. Terse thriller with action elements: the cast’s good, the action is handled in a no-nonsense manner, and there’s a pleasing downbeat tone. No surprises, but a decent programmer with subtext about post-military lives.

The Lost Boys (1987, Dir. Joel Schumacher)

A family moves to a new coastal town for a fresh start and discover it has a vampire gang running wild. Classic 80s in look, soundtrack and cast. There is much to like here in terms of style and pace and it never takes itself too seriously. A strong cast seals the deal. Watch it for old times sake!

The Lost Boys (1987, Dir. Joel Schumacher)

Pompeii (2014, dir. Paul WS Anderson)

A vengeful gladiator and a young noblewoman find love against the odds in 1st century Italy. Cheesy disaster-themed tosh (though never quite camp, Kiefer Sutherland’s panto villain aside), mashing up Titanic and Gladiator to cliched CG-tastic effect. A medium-budget B-movie, and unashamedly so.

Here’s the trailer.

Flatliners (1990, dir. Joel Schumacher)

A group of medical students investigate near-death experiences and come face to face with their guilty secrets. Glossy but stupid Brat Pack quasi-supernatural thriller, with some gothic touches. Remade in 2017.

Flatliners (2017, dir. Niels Arden Oplev)

Medical students investigating near-death experiences find themselves haunted. Slick though bland reprise of the 1990 original; a guesting Kiefer Sutherland is the best thing here in this half-hearted and bloodless horror full of over-age and unlikeable med students.
