Hollow Man (2000, dir. Paul Verhoeven)

An arrogant scientist unleashes his dark side when invisibility experiments go wrong. While lacking the satiric edge of Verhoeven’s best US SF-infused work, this is still a fun, well-resourced and knowingly sleazy horror flick, with all involved operating effectively, showcasing still-impressive effects work..

You Should Have Left (2020, dir. David Koepp)

A wealthy family stay in a remote Welsh vacation rental; the house has secrets. Slight, austere, though generally effective psychological thriller, adapted from the Daniel Kehlmann novel. No real surprises, but the movie’s well-played and directed, and succeeds within the strictures of the Twilight Zone-ish story.

Flatliners (1990, dir. Joel Schumacher)

A group of medical students investigate near-death experiences and come face to face with their guilty secrets. Glossy but stupid Brat Pack quasi-supernatural thriller, with some gothic touches. Remade in 2017.

Frost/Nixon (2008, dir. Ron Howard)

Peter Morgan’s adaptation of his own play about the 1977 David Frost/Richard Nixon TV interviews. A riveting docudrama which plays like a thriller, anchored by two standout performances in the title roles, supported ably by a strong cast. Recommended.

The Darkness (2016, dir. Greg McLean)

A dysfunctional family comes under attack from ancient demons. Standard Blumhouse jump-scare oooga-booga with a clear debt to Poltergeist, though enlivened by a strong cast (Bacon, Mitchell, Reiser) and confident direction from Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean.
