Richard Jewell (2019, dir. Clint Eastwood)

An inadequate security guard becomes the focus of an FBI terrorism enquiry. A stately based-on-a-true-story drama which – despite some clunky telescoping of its story – delivers in character study terms, as well as acknowledging an unconventional hero. Not perfect, but recommended, and with a startling central performance from Paul Walter Hauser.

The Highwaymen (2019, dir. John Lee Hancock)

Two retired lawmen are recruited to hunt down and kill Bonnie and Clyde. Handsome but slow period thriller that can’t quite make up its mind if it wants to go for drama or action. Well-played, though, with a great Thomas Newman score, evoking Road To Perdition.

The Boss (2016, dir Ben Falcone)

A disgraced mogul fights to get her old status back, with the reluctant help of her former PA. Inconsistent comedy with an over-reliance on semi-improvised insult battles rather than having a script that’s organically funny. A lesser McCarthy vehicle.
