Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017, dir. Jake Kasdan)

Four teens are transported into an old video game. Contrived but fun sequel to the 1996 movie, which gets a lot of comedy out of its avatar/body-swap shtick, though the actual story is as linear as the games it spoofs. eXistenZ for kids, almost.

In a Valley of Violence (2016, dir. Ti West)

A US Civil War veteran swears revenge on the men who killed his dog. Lean spaghetti western homage, equal parts John Wick and Pale Rider, with lots to enjoy┬áif you’re a genre aficionado. Nothing too original, but diverting nevertheless. The cast plainly has fun.

The Circle (2017, dir. James Ponsoldt)

A perfect job opportunity at a Facebook-ish company goes awry. Muted adaptation of the Dave Eggers novel that gets some things right (the casting, the production design) but fails in delivering either a propulsive narrative or in nailing the book’s ending.
