Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018, dir. Steven S DeKnight)

Ten years after the events of Pacific Rim, the Jaeger programme is under threat. Teen-oriented sequel which takes the Independence Day: Resurgence route: good-looking international cast and locations, a focus on China as a sales market, a lighter tone, a sense of disposability.

Rampage (2018, dir. Brad Peyton)

A zoologist and a renegade scientist team up to stop genetically-enhanced animals rampaging. Perfunctory and slightly po-faced monster mayhem, with only Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s man in black entering properly into the tongue-in-cheek fray.

Shin Godzilla [AKA Godzilla: Resurgence] (2016, dir. Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi)

A giant creature invades Tokyo. Effective reboot of the long-running monster movie franchise. Godzilla 2016 draws on contemporary concerns, offering a satire of governmental bureaucracy alongside good-looking man v monster mayhem.

Colossal (2016, dir. Nacho Vigalondo)

A woman returns home after a breakup and finds she can control a monster. Splendidly quirky black comedy about alcoholism, obsession, and childhood friendships. Oh, and kaiju. Well worth your time.
