Out of the Shadows [AKA The Devil’s Toy Box] (2017, dir. Allen Kellogg)

A documentary team investigate a supposedly-haunted asylum, the site of a reality show gone wrong five years before. Straightforward jumpscare found-footage horror sequel (to Seven Nights of Darkness), effective for an hour before collapsing in on itself, storywise.

Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016, dir. Mike Flanagan)

A fake medium find her daughter channeling real spirits. Much-improved 60s-set prequel to the 2014 original Ouija, with some lovely period detail and a sense of attention to the genre. No real surprises or outright horror, but a decentjob well done.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015, dir. Leigh Whannell)

Part 3 is a prequel, offering backstory on Elise, and her team-up with Specs and Tucker, plus another demonic yarn. Lots of jump scares, handled well enough if you like this sort of thing, with series screenwriter/actor Whannell now elevated to director.

The Conjuring 2 (2016, dir. James Wan)

The Warrens come to England to investigate the Enfield poltergeist phenomenon. Overlong but decent-enough sequel based on a real case with some lovely 1970s production design and plenty of the standard jump-scare light horror stuff typical of the genre.

Anna [AKA The Offering / The Faith of Anna Waters] (2016, dir. Kelvin Tong)

A young woman investigates her sister’s suicide. Cluttered Singapore-set horror pic, mashing up elements from Ring and The Exorcist. Plenty of jump-scares, too many ideas (albeit some of them interesting), but not much sense, and some weak-sauce acting.

The Darkness (2016, dir. Greg McLean)

A dysfunctional family comes under attack from ancient demons. Standard Blumhouse jump-scare oooga-booga with a clear debt to Poltergeist, though enlivened by a strong cast (Bacon, Mitchell, Reiser) and confident direction from Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean.
