Come Play (2020, dir. Jacob Chase)

A boy with autism is stalked by a digital demon. Well-sustained low-key horror pic, deliberately mashing up early (CE3K, E.T., Poltergeist) Amblin/Spielberg and the likes of The Babadook. Finds plenty of ways to make phones and TVs menacing without labouring allegories about screen time. Recommended.

Underwater (2020, dir. William Ewbank)

A deep underwater drilling platform is compromised; survivors try to escape. Derivative but effective SF/horror piece, taking Alien and sequels as its jumping-off point. Well-designed, with some solid jumpscares and a sturdy lead performance. Pleasingly efficient throughout, if by no means a game-changer.

Peppermint (2018, dir. Pierre Morel)

Five years after her family’s murder, a mother returns to the US for revenge. Straightforward action fantasy with a committed lead performance and an outsider’s view of LA. Not great, but there’s a couple of interesting plot wrinkles along the way.

The Belko Experiment (2016, dir. Greg McLean)

Employees of a mysterious company are compelled to murder each other. Would-be black comedy better at delivering gloopy kills than in having much to say. Neither funny or subversive enough; it gets tiresome before 90 minutes are up.
