Resident Evil [AKA Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City] (2021, dir. Johannes Roberts)

A young woman returns to her hometown: a zombie-like outbreak occurs. This 90s-set series reboot draws from the franchise’s early video games. And that’s about it. A murky and confused action/horror flick with little clear idea about what to do with the property, or why bother.

The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018, dir. Johannes Roberts)

A dysfunctional family on a trip to relatives encounters murderous masked teens. Competent slasher sequel which benefits from a decent cast and some strong moments, but that doesn’t really add anything to its predecessor. A lighter touch makes the flick more accessible, but this might not be what’s quite needed here.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019, dir. Johannes Roberts)

Four schoolfriends are trapped in an underwater ruin. Passable teen-oriented thematic sequel. Doesn’t have the singular purpose of its predecessor, and too much is demanded of an inexperienced cast. No great shakes in the scares department, either, though subgenre fans will have an at least passable time.

Vacationing sisters who take a shark-viewing excursion become trapped underwater. Straightforward and effective survival thriller with horror elements. Does what it can to explore the boundaries of its premise: a sequel soon followed.

The Other Side of the Door (2016, dir. Johannes Roberts)

A grieving mother is offered a way to say a final goodbye to her dead son. Straightforward jumpscare malarkey with a premise very similar to the superior Wake Wood. The film benefits from its interesting Mumbai setting, and some committed acting.
