Sing 2 (2021, dir. Garth Jennings)

Buster Moon talks himself into trouble mounting a show in a Las Vegas-style resort. Dayglo jukebox animation sequel that doesn’t have the focus of the first flick, but nevertheless delivers jokes, visuals, and a musical palette from Mercury Rev to System of a Down via Prince, Billie Eilish, and The King and I. Something for everyone, pretty much.

Death On The Nile (2022, dir. Kenneth Branagh)

Hercule Poirot joins a wedding party in Egypt: murder follows. This second Branagh Agatha Christie adaptation suffers like its predecessor from plasticky production values, over-direction, and a too-serious approach to the material. It livens up eventually, but the Ustinov version is still way more fun.

Muppet Treasure Island (1996, dir. Brian Henson)

Patterned after the success of the peerless Muppet Christmas Carol, this romp through the RL Stevenson classic is less certain, but there are enough jokes, production detail, and exuberance to pass muster, plus two great songs (“Cabin Fever” and “Professional Pirate”).
