A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010, dir. Samuel Bayer)

A group of teenagers are stalked by a vengeful dream demon. A well-resourced series reboot – remaking the 1984 genre classic – that works well enough on its own terms, but which doesn’t add enough (a voguish focus on the villain’s backstory aside) to make it distinctive. Fine in itself, though, if hardly memorable.

Alita: Battle Angel (2019, dir. Robert Rodriguez)

In a post-apocalyptic world, a reactivated cyborg finds she has advanced military capabilities. Generally solid though straightforward action-adventure, with manga and cyberpunk influences. Slightly hobbled by an excess of backstory and by awkward reliance on green screen, but well-designed, with some genuine imagination on display.

Dark Shadows (2012, dir. Tim Burton)

An ancient vampire is resurrected; he vows to restore the family fortunes. Gothic comedy-horror revival of the 60s TV series. Initially very funny, but soon collapses as there’s not much story, and the film runs out of culture-clash gags. Looks great, though. Minor Burton, alas.

The Dark Tower (2017, dir. Nikolaj Arcel)

A fatherless boy is hunted as both the potential saviour and destructor of the multiverse. Impressively-designed and well shot, this is nevertheless an oddly perfunctory and rushed movie, cherrypicking 90 minutes of action from the Stephen King fantasy cycle.
