Hellboy (2019, dir. Neil Marshall)

Hellboy battles an ancient sorceress from Arthurian legend. Famously-troubled shooting and post-production bedevilled this fantasy horror series reboot, which as a consequence is all over the place. Some good stuff, but its awkward storytelling is patched with flashbacks, dubbed dialogue, variable FX, overlength; the works. A shame.

Deadwood [AKA Deadwood: The Movie] (2019, dir. Daniel Minahan)

Over a decade has passed since the events of the TV series, and Swearengen, Bullock and others have to face up to their pasts and their futures. Elegaic return to a splendid unfinished TV show that does the original justice. Recommended.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019, dir. Chad Stahelski)

Wick, now excommunicado, seeks a way back. Part 3 expands on the series mythology and develops both the character’s backstory and the action choreography. Not all of the plot makes sense, but for the main part, this is exhilarating physical entertainment with some dark humour.

Villain (1971, dir. Michael Tuchner)

The fall of a London gangster. Great bit of lowlife Cockney thuggery, with Burton playing a character that has attributes of both Kray twins. Huge strength in depth in the casting, plus lots of quirky detail, and a snarling central performance. Recommended.

The Hollow Point (AKA Desert Gun) (2016, dir. Gonzalo López-Gallego)

An Arizona sheriff finds his old hometown involved in a conspiracy to smuggle arms to Mexico. Straightforward borderlands thriller with a couple of good performances and aspirations to be No Country For Old Men, which is no bad thing.

John Wick (2014, dir. Chad Stahelski & David Leitch)

A retired assassin returns to the fray. A glorious stylised neo-noir action flick with a neat mythology, splendid choreography, crisp direction, some sly humour, and committed performances all round. The 2014 state of the action movie-making art.
