Mississippi Grind (2015, dir. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck)

A deadbeat gambler goes on a road trip with a stranger he considers a lucky charm. A great, unassuming little movie with more than a touch of realism that works well with road movie tropes and allows Mendelsohn, in particular, the space to shine. Hugely recommended.

Molly’s Game (2017, dir. Aaron Sorkin)

The true story of Molly Bloom, who ran high-stakes poker games in New York and LA. Excellent drama, balanced by a fine central performance and swaggering writing, chronicling a perhaps typical rise and fall-style story, but done with class and confidence.

13 (2010, dir. Géla Babluani)

A desperate young man stumbles into a murderous gambling game. Okay English-language remake of the director’s own 13 Tzameti with a solid cast of character actors doing something a bit different, though the well-known faces impact on narrative tension.
