Street Kings (2008, dir. David Ayer)

An alcoholic LA detective with a reputation for violence comes under scrutiny from internal affairs. Generally solid double-cross-tastic bad cop-worse cop rough-and tumble that teeters on the brink of melodrama, but just about holds it together.

Panic Room (2002, dir. David Fincher)

A woman and her daughter hide in their high-tech new home from safe crackers. Effective Hitchcockian thriller which makes much play out of the possibilities of CG as well as the fun to be had in setting thieves against each other.

Platoon (1986, dir. Oliver Stone)

An idealistic volunteer learns the brutality of war the hard way. Simplistic but undeniably effective Vietnam War morality play, with a soldier’s-eye perspective throughout; an excellent ensemble cast supports the drama.
