Black Widow (2021, dir. Cate Shortland)

Natasha Romanoff reunites with her estranged fake family to disrupt a post-Soviet Russian agent programme. Patchy Marvel SF/spy adventure (the first Phase 4 movie) awkwardly balancing dysfunctional familial bickering and action set-pieces. A strong cast helps, as does a relatively low-stakes approach and some attempts at character.

Midsommar (2019, dir. Ari Aster)

A bereaved student in a failing relationship becomes part of a group visit to a Scandinavian commune. Contrived but watchable Kubrick-does-The-Wicker-ManĀ folk horror. Does exactly what you’d expect, at some length, but has mesmerising sequences even if you might not quite buy what’s going on.

Malevolent (2018, dir. Olaf de Fleur)

Sibling scammers running a spirit cleansing con face real ghosts. An old plot, though with some OK angles. The film’s overstuffed and can’t deal with all of its ideas fairly, though delivers some excellent jump scares. Comes off the rails by act three. Florence Pugh shows her early lead potential.

Outlaw/King (AKA Outlaw King) (2018, dir David MacKenzie)

Robert the Bruce rebels against Edward I. Straightforward historical action drama in the Braveheart mould, with plenty of detail, production values aplenty and some gusto in the playing. Blood, mud and a trebuchet/mangonel device.
