Terminator: Genisys (2015, dir. Alan Taylor)

Time-travelling freedom fighters attempt to prevent a digital apocalypse in near-future (2017) San Francisco. Muddled series reboot saddled with awkward plotting, key unanswered questions, and too many borrowings. Only JK Simmons brings some fun in support.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, dir. Ron Howard)

A Han Solo origin tale. After a clunky and stagey first act, this heist western SF hybrid finds its feet, even though its nominal lead is a black hole around which much more interesting support stuff occurs. Inconsequential.

Voice From The Stone (2017, dir. Eric Dennis Howell)

A nurse tries to encourage a boy to speak after the death of his mother. Good-looking but slow mystery/horror with a hundred borrowings (everything from The Others to Rebecca) and a straightforward though inevitable resolution.
