Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018, dir. Ol Parker)

In 1979, a student has romantic adventures in the Med; this links with the present. Both sequel and prequel to Mamma Mia!, this ABBA-based jukebox musical is part-reprise, part deconstruction. More fun than the first, and as impermeable to criticism as its predecessor. You’ll either love it, or be baffled.

Stratton (2017, dir. Simon West)

A Special Boat Service operative races against time to prevent a terrorist attack. Utterly secondhand and dull thriller, lacking in decent action, watchable performances, or a script with an iota of originality. Astonishing this got a cinema release, when stronger fare goes straight to download/DVD.

Dead Man Down (2013, dir. Niels Arden Oplev)

A man seeksĀ revenge on the gangster who killed his family. Glum thriller that spends too much time on taking itself too seriously and with obvious mystery and romance subplots. Good technical credits, tho, and fun cameos (Armand Assante, F Murray Abraham).
