Black ’47 (2018, dir. Lance Daly)

A posse chases a vengeful ex-soldier across famine-torn Ireland. Vivid and evocative revenge drama, using Western genre tropes to support a specific Irish story with contemporary wider relevance. Some unnecessary and iffy CG mattes aside, this is great stuff.

The Death of Stalin (2017, dir. Armando Iannucci)

A power struggle ensues in the USSR when Stalin dies suddenly. Frantic black comedy which plays totalitarianism as a dark farce. Hugely impressive, with a great cast clearly having fun throughout, while making a few satirical points along the way. Recommended.

The Foreigner (2017, dir Martin Campbell)

A Chinese ex-soldier targets the former IRA boss he holds responsible for his daughter’s death. Enjoyable tho daft flick which struggles to reconcile its dated Troubles backstory with 21st century geriaction revenge concerns. Solid direction, good performances, and some deft stuntwork make this more than watchable.
