The origins of an independent spy agency, set against the Great War. Messy and inconsistent prequel, showcasing series strengths (brio, some startling moments) and weaknesses (tonal awkwardness) in equal measure. A freewheeling approach to both history and emotion throughout render this flashy, but empty.
Dramatization of an infamous 1976 plane hijacking, and the subsequent rescue mission. Even-handed but glum retelling which doesn’t know how to approach its subject, meaning the end result is neither political allegory, action drama or straight history. Disappointing.
A space station tasked with saving the Earth from energy crisis is transported to a parallel dimension. Good-looking, well-cast, but dumb-as-rocks sidequel to Cloverfield / 10 Cloverfield Lane that steals indiscriminately (Gravity to Evil Dead II) but can’t settle in terms of tone or logic.
