Encanto (2021, dir. Jared Bush & Byron Howard, with Charise Castro Smith)

A Columbian family fractures when their magical powers weaken. Great-looking but derivative animation with too much tickbox Disney stuff, saddled with dull songs. Moments amuse, and the small scale gives focus, but there’s nothing here that Moana or Coco didn’t do ten times better.

Here’s the trailer.

Padre [AKA The Padre] (2018, dir. Jonathan Sobol)

A young Columbian woman partners with an English conman in exchange for help with getting into the US. Decent little road movie/chase thriller with some quirky aspects and excellent location shooting. No game-changer, but a solid cast keeps things moving along.

The Belko Experiment (2016, dir. Greg McLean)

Employees of a mysterious company are compelled to murder each other. Would-be black comedy better at delivering gloopy kills than in having much to say. Neither funny or subversive enough; it gets tiresome before 90 minutes are up.

Another perspective? Here’s Xussia’s view.
