First Man (2018, dir. Damien Chazelle)

Biopic of Neil Armstrong, from test pilot to Apollo 11 days. An impressionistic, oblique approach doesn’t really penetrate the subject, leaving Gosling free to offer another blank, introverted performance. Impressive rather than good, though with a sterling cast of character actors in support.

Red Sparrow (2018, dir. Francis Lawrence)

A Russian ballerina is recruited by her uncle into an elite spy training programme. Good-looking but deathly slow melodrama which pretends the Cold War is ongoing. Plenty of solid character actors with silly accents in European cities doing double-crosses.

Justice League (2017, dir. Zack Snyder)

After the events of Dawn of Justice, Bruce Wayne assembles a team to combat the new threat of Steppenwolf. Okay series continuation, with a lighter tone; a straightforward plot and a stagey look are distractions from an at-times impressive cast.

Bleed For This (2016, dir. Ben Younger)

Biopic of Vinny Pazienza, who overcame a broken neck to return to championship-standard boxing. A straightforward but immersive triumph-over-adversity story from the headlines, with great work from a talented cast, especially Ciaran Hinds and Aaron Eckhart.
