Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018, dir. Steven S DeKnight)

Ten years after the events of Pacific Rim, the Jaeger programme is under threat. Teen-oriented sequel which takes the Independence Day: Resurgence route: good-looking international cast and locations, a focus on China as a sales market, a lighter tone, a sense of disposability.

Police Story: Lockdown [AKA Police Story 2013] (2013, dir. Ding Sheng)

A Chinese cop trying to find his daughter becomes embroiled in a siege situation. Unrelated to the previous Police Story movies, and with a more serious tone than previous, this is a glossy but over-directed actioner ultimately limited by plot and budget constraints.

The Great Wall (2016, dir. Zhang Yimou)

Two European brigands help China defend its empire from monsters. Intermittently undeniably spectacular, with some keen use of 3D, this is nevertheless a very straightforward fantasy siege movie which feels oddly bland, secondhand, and compromised.
