Gunpowder Milkshake (2021, dir. Navot Papushado)

A hitwoman becomes embroiled in an escalating series of double-crosses when a job goes awry. Stylised John Wick-ish action comedy squandering an excellent cast on a cliched script, and on a baffling series of distancing techniques rendering the flick good-looking (and sounding) but empty, flat and uninvolving.

Here’s the trailer.

Faster (2010, Dir. George Tillman Jr.)

An ex-con seeks revenge on gang that killed his brother. Early Dwayne Johnson vehicle that throws story logic out of the window in favour of plot contrivance. Nothing new to offer but nicely shot – with clear intentions to show Johnson off as more than an ex-wrestler.

Faster (2010, Dir. George Tillman Jr.)

San Andreas (2015, dir. Brad Peyton)

A quake hits California; an estranged family tries to reunite. Despite hitting every dumb cliche in the disaster movie book, San Andreas is still an entertaining-enough flick, not least because it plays straight with its hackneyed material.

Gerald’s Game (2017, dir. Mike Flanagan)

When a sex game goes wrong, a woman has to fight her demons. Solid adaptation of the Stephen King novel which, though it fumbles its last revelation, is well-acted and which cinematically sustains its potentially unfilmable premise.
