The Hole [AKA The Hole in 3D] (2009, dir. Joe Dante)

A family finds their new home has a bottomless well in its basement. Straightforward but fun child-friendly horror flick, strong on jump scares and excellent 3D composition, while riffing on the likes of Poltergeist and Amityville 3D.

The Senator [AKA Chappaquiddick] (2017, dir. John Curran)

Edward Kennedy’s presidential ambitions are destroyed because of his involvement in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. Sober political drama focusing on ambition, hubris, legacy, and arrogance. Decent performances and production values help, though there’s awkwardness in the focus on the politician over the deceased.

The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019, dir. Tyler Nilson & Michael Schwartz)

A young man with Down Syndrome escapes his assisted living facility; he teams up with a troubled crab fisherman. A straightforward but nevertheless charming and unsentimental comedy-drama road movie with wrestling and a whiff of Huck and Tom about it. Fine soundtrack, and a cast in depth to die for. No surprises, but fun.
