Captain Marvel (2019, dir. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck)

An alien warrior works to prevent a rival species from gaining a foothold on 1995 Earth. Slow-starting but generally entertaining superhero origin flick, wisely not overdoing its nostalgic comedy; the film’s hampered somewhat by the low-stakes storyline.

Avengers: Endgame (2019, dir. Anthony Russo & Joe Russo)

The remaining Avengers plan an elaborate time heist to recover the infinity stones and undo the events of the recent war. Crowd-pleasing sequel/series endpoint that succeeds in narrative closure and fanservice terms. It’s TV by this stage, but impeccably done.

Free Fire (2016, dir. Ben Wheatley)

A weapons deal goes bad. A contrived but slick, funny, and thoroughly entertaining action/horror hybrid that makes no bones about its B-movie borrowings. Everyone involved is clearly having fun; Wheatley’s best film to date.

Kong: Skull Island (2017, dir. Jordan Vogt-Roberts)

Or, Heart of Kongness. 1973-set mash-up of Conrad, every Vietnam flick ever, and Conan Doyle-ish Lost World stuff, with a bit of Treasure Island thrown in. B-movie fun while it’s on.
