The Iron Giant (1999, dir. Brad Bird)

A boy befriends a massive alien robot. Smart, affecting and upbeat Cold War-era animation, varying the ET template enough to make this adaptation of Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man¬†successful in its own right. A good job done all around, with a positive message carefully dramatised.

Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011, dir. Brad Bird)

Ethan Hunt and his IMF team hunt down an extremist with a nuclear capability. More of a series of (admittedly fun and exciting) set-pieces than a movie as such, this fourth instalment is exhilarating while its on, but doesn’t leave a lasting impression.

Incredibles 2 (2018, dir. Brad Bird)

Elastigirl works to redeem public perception of superheroes, while Mr Incredible wrestles with baby Jack-Jack’s burgeoning powers. Perhaps overlong and overly-similar to the first film, this is nevertheless expertly-designed and executed family entertainment.
